Alaskan Trail Building Service Work
The trip resonated with me because it allowed me to pursue my love of nature while making a real difference in the world.
An excerpt from an essay recounting the experience
Then with groggy eyes and slow steps, we trudged up the mountain through incoming torrents of rain pickaxe and saw in hand. As we approached the worksite I was horrified by the vast stretch of primal wilderness we would have to tame. But as I started working I felt calm and at peace. The downfall of rain that soaked me to the core no longer bothered me. The slow methodical swing of the pickaxe felt meaningful. I watched as our work steadily cleared a path. And even though by the end of that day we had only completed about 15 ft of the trail the sense of accomplishment I felt was unrivaled.
